College &
Career
Readiness
One of the programs I am very proud of is the way we prepare our students with college & career readiness. Our teachers and staff do a great job teaching theses skills as well.
The Leader In Me
We believe in teaching the “8 Great Traits of Toll Gate”- These are the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People + Find Your Voice which is the 8th new habit. We believe that if the students continue to learn these Habits it will give them an advantage for their future.
College Career Exploration (CCE)
Every student in 1st – 4th grades will have an opportunity to attend our College Career Exploration presentations performed by a parent or community member discussing their careers. Every month from October – March we have a guest speaker come in and discuss their career with the kids during the end of the day. Each presenter will discuss their career and we leave time at the end for questions. This is another way to show students careers that are available in our community.
Toll Gate Elementary School's Career Video Series
This is a video series which was completed several years ago. Some of our students interviewed parents and community members about their careers. We have interviewed a doctor, lawyer, master mechanic, college professor, scientist, engineer, and list goes on. We have 25 career videos with a pretty cool introduction song. The kids enjoy the videos. The same questions are asked and the main message is that Reading, Writing (Communication) and Math are important to all careers. I always remind the students that what they are learning about right now is important to learn for your future career. They aren’t just competing against other Toll Gate students; they are competing globally with the skills they are developing.
S.T.E.M. (Science – Technology – Engineering – Mathematics
I do not do as much with STEM as with the above programs for College & Career Readiness. However, I do help out and support the school when asked to participate in STEM activities. Again, I believe being a STEM school gives our students an advantage over other students who are not engaged in Math and Science hands on activities and problem solving.
